NIH study finds that coffee drinkers have lower risk of death

Older adults who drank coffee — caffeinated or decaffeinated — had a lower risk of death overall than others who did not drink coffee, according a study by researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and AARP. Coffee drinkers were less likely to die from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections, although the association was not seen for cancer. These results from a large study of older adults were observed after adjustment for the effects of other risk factors on mortality, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Researchers caution, however, that they can't be sure whether these associations mean that drinking coffee actually makes people live longer. The results of the study were published in the May 17, 2012 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Obesity in Teenagers: Prognosis

In industrialized countries, adult obesity is spreading over and over with bigger and bigger proportions, also for great obese (BMI > 40 kg/m2), so, given the poorness of effective treatments (apart from bariatric surgery, with its risks), one refers above all to prevention. Researchers have tried to understand which is the probability that an obese teenager remains obese also in his adulthood, performing a prospective cohort study on 8834 teenagers with a normal weight or obese, followed from 1996 to 2009, the year when their average age was 29 years old.

Low-Carbohydrate Diet and Mortality

In order to obtain a body weight loss, the choice to perform a low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet does not imply great differences, even if low-carbohydrate diets obtain the result more rapidly. Some researchers have wondered whether low-carbohydrate diet can, in some ways, influence life duration; they have used observational data from diaries kept during a period of over 20 years by the participants at the NURSES’ HEALTH STUDY, which has collected over 85,000 women, and from the HEALTH PROFESSIONALS FOLLOW-UP trial, which has instead involved over 44,000 males.

Nutrition labelling: not as effective as you might think

Consumers use nutrition labels to make informed decisions about eating the 'right' foods for better health. But new research from Europe shows how there are limitations on how these labels can be used in real-life situations. The results are an outcome of the FLABEL ('Food labelling to advance better education for life ') project, which has clinched almost EUR 2.9 million in funding under the 'Food, agriculture and fisheries, and biotechnology' (European Knowledge Based Bio-Economy or KBBE) Theme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

The virtual coach was beneficial in maintaining activity level. The long-term benefits and additional applications of this technology warrant further study. These are the conclusion of a randomized controlled trial on 70 people testing if a virtual coach would increase activity levels, via step count, in overweight or obese individuals beyond the effect observed using a pedometer and website alone.

Removal of “homeopathic” HCG weight loss products from the market

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today issued seven Warning Letters to companies marketing over-the counter (OTC) HCG products that are labeled as “homeopathic” for weight loss. The labeling for the “homeopathic” HCG products states that each product should be taken in conjunction with a very low calorie diet. There is no substantial evidence HCG increases weight loss beyond that resulting from the recommended caloric restriction. Consumers on a very low calorie diet are at increased risk for side effects including gallstone formation, electrolyte imbalance, and heart arrhythmias. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone produced by the human placenta and found in the urine of pregnant women. HCG is FDA-approved as an injectable prescription drug for the treatment of some cases of female infertility and other medical conditions.
