Babies born to women with sensitivity to gluten appear to be at increased risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders later in life, according to new findings from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and Johns Hopkins University, United States. Maternal infections and other inflammatory disorders during pregnancy have long been linked to a greater risk for schizophrenia in the offspring. However the current study, which will be published in the June issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry, is the first to point to maternal food sensitivity as a possible culprit in the development of such disorders later in life.

Adherence to bipolar medications may also promote adherence to antiretroviral therapy

Individuals with bipolar disorder and other severe mental illnesses are more likely to have higher rates of HIV infection compared to the general population, possibly due to impulsive behaviors or substance use disorders. Individuals with bipolar disorder usually require long-term treatment with various psychotropic medications. Patients with bipolar disorder, who adhere to their bipolar medications, are also more likely to adhere to their antiretroviral treatment for HIV infection, suggests a new study using prescription refill data. It retrospectively examined data from Medicaid claims in 8 States from 2001 to 2004. A total of 10,971 beneficiaries were identified as having both bipolar disorder and HIV infection. The final sample included 1,687 patients.

When we speak of sudden interruption of treatment, we refer to a period of 1-7 days, while gradual interruption implies the use of a drug at reduced doses for at least 14 days.
