Sexual Side Effects From finasteride and dutasteride May Be Irreversible

Drugs frequently prescribed to treat hair loss or an enlarged prostate may contribute to irreversible sexual dysfunction in men, new research finds. Use of dutasteride (Avodart) and finasteride (Proscar and Propecia) were linked to erectile dysfunction, depression and loss of libido in a review of existing studies.

Men with celiac disease are no more likely to suffer from infertility than men without the condition, which makes people intolerant to gluten, suggests a new study from Sweden. Researchers tracked about 7,000 Swedish men who had been diagnosed with celiac disease and 32,000 similarly aged men without celiac disease. In all time periods the researchers looked at, both before and after celiac disease was diagnosed, men who were ultimately diagnosed with the condition did not suffer from infertility any more than men without celiac disease, as measured by their number of children. At the end of the study, about 35 percent of men with and without celiac disease had not had any children.

Should males be vaccinated against HPV?

The association between human papillomavirus virus (HPV) and several cancers has prompted experts to ponder whether HPV vaccination programmes should be extended to males. In the USA, an estimated 20 000 cases of cancer are caused by HPV infection every year. Aside from cervical cancer, the virus is also implicated in head and neck, anal, penile, vaginal, and vulval cancers. The combined incidence of these cancers equals that of cervical cancer.
