Facebook to Ask Users to Share Organ Donor Status

Facebook as a way to answer to the critical shortage of donated organs in the United States: Facebook users can now share their organ donor status with friends and family in the same way they share basic information about where they went to college or who they are married to. The hope is that, by starting a conversation with friends and family through social media, the discussion will go viral, with a critical mass of people educating themselves about the benefits of organ donation and choosing to register as organ donors.

Autologous Stem Cells in Kidney Transplants

Immunosuppressive induction therapy—routine in organ transplants—reduces the risk of organ rejection but is associated with adverse effects. Infusion of bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells, which have immunoregulatory effects, may offer an alternative immunosuppressive approach. In a randomized trial of 159 patients undergoing living-related kidney transplants, Tan and colleagues found that compared with conventional anti–interleukin 2 receptor antibody–based therapy, a regimen that involved infusion of autologous mesenchymal stem cells was associated with a lower incidence of acute rejection and better renal function at 1 year.

Kidney Allocation and the Aging Immune Response

The mainstay of the existing kidney-allocation policy for deceased donors has been the assignment of priority for waiting time, in addition to HLA matching and geographic aspects. The new proposal for kidney allocation calls for the assignment of 20% of available organs that are characterized as “high quality” to recipients with a high estimated rate of survival after transplantation. The remaining 80% of available organs would then be distributed to patients who are within 15 years of the donor's age (i.e., older or younger).

FDA clears test to help patients with kidney transplants

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that it has cleared a test to help manage potential organ rejection in kidney transplant patients. The test, called QMS Everolimus Immunoassay, monitors the blood level of everolimus, a drug that helps prevent rejection in kidney transplants.

Everolimus, marketed under the trade name Zortress, was approved by FDA in April 2010 for use in adult kidney transplant patients who are at low-to-moderate immunologic risk.

The Tdast is an excellent choice for reconstruction in the head and neck as an alternative to procedures requiring vein grafting and multiple free tissue transplants, or in which the 3-dimensional contour of the scapular tip aids in reconstruction. The complication rate should be assessed in the context of the risk factors of the patient population and the outcome with respect to stable employment, increasing body mass index, and maintenance of shoulder function.

New ideas in organ donation

“Transplants can transform the quality of people's lives, but are currently limited by the availability of organs” proclaims a report published last week by the UK Government about the first year of the country's Organ Donation Taskforce implementation programme. Over 16 million people have demonstrated their agreement by signing the NHS Organ Donor Register. But nearly 10 000 people in the UK are still waiting for a life-saving organ transplant—a queue that is lengthening by about 8% a year—and 1000 people die every year waiting for organs. The increasing incidence of kidney failure, particularly in people aged over 50 years and ethnic minorities, is a key underlying factor.
