Dementia: a public health priority - Alzheimer's Disease International & WHO Report

Improvements in health care in the past century have contributed to people living longer and healthier lives. However, this has also resulted in an increase in the number of people with non-communicable diseases, including dementia. The report provides the knowledge base for a global and national response to facilitate governments, policy-makers, and other stakeholders to address the impact of dementia as an increasing threat to global health. I call upon all stakeholders to make health and social care systems informed and responsive to this impending threat.

Usability of therapy controllers in elderly patients with deep brain stimulation (DBS)

Technical devices are becoming more prevalent in society and also in medical care. Older adults need more support to learn new technologies than younger subjects. A research showed that elderly DBS patients who have been using the controller for several years still have various difficulties in operating the device. However, age-specific training may improve the performance. In general, the design of DBS patient controllers should focus on the specific needs of the end-users. But as changes to medical devices take a long time to be implemented, video instructions with age-specific content plus hands-on training may improve learning for older adults.

According to a greater and greater number of remarks, the existing relation between physical capability to perform daily physical tasks and the future state of good health has been strengthened, until it has arrived at a link between this capability and mortality.
Vitamin D deficiency implies some dysfunctions which are well known, but still little has been ascertained on the relation between cognitive capabilities and this vitamin. An Italian trial on elderly (inCHIANTI trial, published in the Journal of American Geriatric Society in 2000) has given the data to some researchers to verify the relation between cognitive decline and 25(OH)D levels in 858 subjects of averagely 74 years of age.
