There is a clear prevalence of colorectal cancer in western countries, which can be easily explained with an association between this type of cancer and lifestyle. Through a prospective study performed in Denmark, more than 55,000 people between 50 and 64 years of age have been examined, determining the association between a simple index representing lifestyle and the incidence of this particular cancer.

According to many epidemiological studies, we know that the increase in plasmatic homocysteine is associated with a decrease in cognitive functions, so researchers consequently wondered whether vitamin B supplementation, capable to decrease the levels of homocysteine, can avoid or delay cognitive decrease.

To evaluate the feasability, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of short message service (SMS) or text message reminders to improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy for youth living with HIV/AIDS, researchers conducted a prospective pilot study using a pre–post design from 2009 to 2010 at a community-based health center providing clinical services to youth living with HIV/AIDS. Results showed that personalized, interactive, daily SMS reminders were feasible and acceptable, and they significantly improved self-reported adherence. Larger controlled studies are needed to determine the impact of this intervention on antiretroviral therapy adherence and other related health outcomes for youth living with HIV/AIDS.

Hepatitis B-infected patients with significantly longer telomeres were found to have an increased risk of getting liver cancer compared to those with shorter ones, according to findings presented by researchers at Jefferson's Kimmel Cancer Center at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2012. A strong correlation between telomere length and non-cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a liver cancer commonly caused from hepatitis B and C viral infections, could help physicians better stratify the hepatitis B population in an effort to better prevent and treat the disease.

Autoimmunity to collagen VII is typically associated with the skin blistering disease epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA), but also occurs occasionally in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus or inflammatory bowel disease. A study developed an immunoassay for assessing the presence of autoantibodies against collagen VII in large cohorts of patients and healthy donors.

Students were mostly concordant on what conditions should be classified as "disease". They were more likely to classify synonyms as 'disease' if the label was medical. These are the outcome of a survey, aimed at determining how medical students classify a range of conditions they might encounter in their professional lives and whether a different name for a condition would influence their decision in the categorisation of the condition as a 'disease' or 'not a disease'.

In a recent article in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Senti et al. could reduce the number of allergen injections to three by enhancing antigen presentation. Firstly, the allergen was injected directly into lymph nodes. Secondly, the allergen, recombinant cat dander allergen Fel d 1, was fused with an intracellular translocation sequence and with an invariant chain to enhance presentation via MHC class II to CD4 T cells.
