Survival in Patients with Advanced Dementia

One of the questions with no answer is the one relative to survival in patients with an advanced stage of dementia, and the answer to this question often influences the decisions of possible hospitalizations in palliative care structures. With a prospective study, the prevision of death among 606 patients hospitalized in a protected structure in Massachusetts have been examined, according to two parameters: the ADEPT (Advanced Dementia Prognostic Tool) score, an evaluation scale including 12 factors, among which age, presence of trophic ulcers, incontinence, recent weight loss, where the scale ranges from 1 to 32.5 points and where the highest score indicates a lower survival.

A Clinical Trial to Maintain Glycemic Control in Youth with Type 2 Diabetes

A comparison of the efficacy of three treatment regimens to achieve durable glycemic control in children and adolescents with recent-onset type 2 diabetes shows that monotherapy with metformin appears to be associated with durable glycemic control in approximately half of children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes. The addition of rosiglitazone, but not an intensive lifestyle intervention, resulted superior to metformin alone.

Use of Social Media by Western European Hospitals

Patients increasingly use social media to communicate. Their stories could support quality improvements in participatory health care and could support patient-centered care. Active use of social media by health care institutions could also speed up communication and information provision to patients and their families, thus increasing quality even more. Hospitals seem to be becoming aware of the benefits social media could offer. A longitudinal study explored the use of social media by hospitals in 12 Western European countries through an Internet search and showed that social media awareness in Western European hospitals is growing, as well as its use.

Internet-Based Computer Tailored Feedback on Sunscreen Use

Internet and computer tailored (CT) technology fosters the development of highly individualized health communication messages. A cross-sectional research showed that involvement with skin cancer was reflected in more positive beliefs toward sunscreen use, and that the CT Internet program was well accepted. Moreover, a pro-active approach is very well suited to reach various groups of people and is more likely to be successful than a reactive approach.
