  • Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases With Statin Therapy: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

While the role of hydroxymethyl glutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins) in secondary prevention of cardiovascular (CV) events and mortality is established, their value for primary prevention is less clear. To clarify the role of statins for patients without CV disease, we performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

  • Risk of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in Relation to Body Mass Index

Obesity is associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), but it is unknown whether the association differs by duration or persistence of AF. It is also unknown to what extent cardiovascular risk factors may mediate this association.

  • Physical Activity And Cardiovascular Risk In Children

Physical activity is associated to a decrease in cardiovascular risk, but how much activity is necessary to obtain this effect in childhood? In order to answer to this question a cross-sectional study was performed (The European Youth Heart Study) involving 915 girls and 817 boys between 9 and 15 years of age, enrolled in Denmark, Estonia and Portugal.

  • Strategies for Reducing the Door-to-Balloon Time in Acute Myocardial Infarction

Hospitals have a variety of strategies to reduce the time from arrival at the hospital to intracoronary balloon inflation (door-to-balloon time) for patients who have acute myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation. In a study of 365 hospitals, 28 institutional strategies were identified with the use of a field-tested questionnaire. These strategies were correlated with door-to-balloon times for individual patients as reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Six strategies were associated with a significant reduction in the door-to-balloon time. The use of these strategies may improve outcomes for patients.

  • Protective Effects of Erythropoietin in Cardiac Ischemia: From Bench to Bedside

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hypoxia-induced hormone produced in the kidneys that stimulates hematopoiesis in the bone marrow. However, recent studies have also shown important nonhematopoietic effects of EPO.

  • Myocardial Contrast Echocardiography Evolving as a Clinically Feasible Technique for Accurate, Rapid, and Safe Assessment of Myocardial Perfusion: The Evidence So Far

Intravenous myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) is a recently developed technique for assessment of myocardial perfusion. Up to now, many studies have demonstrated that the sensitivity and specificity of qualitative assessment of myocardial perfusion by MCE in patients with acute and chronic ischemic heart disease are comparable with other techniques such as cardiac scintigraphy and dobutamine stress echocardiography.

  • Universal Donor Cells Suitable for Any Patient Who Needs Myocardial Repair

Repairing a damaged myocardium with "universal donor" cells — using stem cells from an unrelated donor, or even an animal — is approaching clinical trials, after successful results of early trials being conducted at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
