  • Study Supports Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer

Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have found that the most widely used radiation treatment – intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) – is better at controlling localized prostate cancer than the older conformal radiation therapy (CRT) and is just as effective as proton therapy, which is a newer technique. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, compared outcomes and side effects of these 3 different types of radiation.

  • Iodine-125 brachytherapy for brain tumours

Iodine-125 brachytherapy has been applied to brain tumours since 1979. Even though the physical and biological characteristics make these implants particularly attractive for minimal invasive treatment, the place for stereotactic brachytherapy is still poorly defined. An extensive review of the literature has been performed, especially concerning indications, results and complications.

  • New study casts doubt on lung cancer treatment

A controversial radiation treatment for patients who've had lung cancer surgery may not help elderly people live longer, U.S. researchers have found. Postoperative radiotherapy, or PORT, is thought to cut the chances that a tumor will return. But it can damage the heart and lungs, which might cancel out any potential benefits -- particularly in seniors.

  • Second malignancies in breast cancer patients following radiotherapy

A study, evaluating the effect that radiotherapy may have had on the subsequent risk of second malignancies, including the possible influences of age at treatment and menopausal status, indicates that a raised risk of second malignancies is associated with radiotherapy for breast cancer, particularly for women treated after the menopause.

  • Histotype Predicts the Curative Potential of Radiotherapy

To explore the influence of ovarian cancer histotype on the effectiveness of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT), it has been done a review of a population-based experience included all referred women with no reported macroscopic residuum following primary surgery who underwent adjuvant platin-based chemotherapy (CT), with or without sequential RT, and for whom it was possible to assign histotype according to the contemporary criteria. Data suggest substantial benefits from RT in those with low-stage, no macroscopic residuum, nonserous disease, with a reduction of 40% in DSM.
