  • NKT cells: manipulable managers of joint inflammation

Natural killer T (NKT) cells are a distinctive population of T cells thought to protect self-tissues from damaging inflammatory immune responses, and are often recognized as a regulatory T cell subtype, regulating the magnitude or class of the immune response.

  • Investigation of the role of ENPP1 and TNAP genes in chondrocalcinosis

Extracellular inorganic pyrophosphate (ePPi) inhibits certain forms of pathological mineralization while promoting others. Three molecules involved in ePPi regulation are important candidates for the development of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate chondrocalcinosis (CPPD CC).

  • Rheumatoid synovial endothelial cells produce macrophage colony-stimulating factor leading to osteoclastogenesis in rheumatoid arthritis

Periarticular osteoporosis and joint destruction are major complications in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), caused by osteoclast-mediated bone resorption.

  • Invitation to apply for membership of the guideline development group on rheumatoid arthritis

The National Collaborating Centre for Chronic Conditions (NCC-CC) is hosted by the Royal College of Physicians. The NCC-CC has been commissioned by NICE to develop an evidence-based clinical guideline on rheumatoid arthritis and is currently looking to recruit members for the Guideline Development Group (GDG).

  • Chimerism in systemic lupus erythematosus: three hypotheses

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an immune-mediated disease characterized by the presence of autoantibodies and a wide array of clinical symptoms. Despite intensive research, the aetiology of SLE is still unknown and is probably multifactorial. Both genetic and environmental factors have been associated with SLE, but these factors alone are insufficient to explain the onset of SLE.

  • Increased expression of CD154 (CD40L) on stimulated T-cells from patients with psoriatic arthritis

CD40L is a costimulatory molecule and an early activation marker of T-lymphocytes. Based on the hypothesis that activated T-cells may play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriatic arthritis (PsA), we evaluated the level of CD40L expression on T-cells from patients with PsA.
