The diagnosis of peripheral arterial diseases is generally based on clinical reports and on the measurement of arm/ankle pressure index. But when we are before the need to proceed with revascularization surgeries, imaging techniques are obviously used to have a surer diagnosis and to quantify the problem. With this meta-analysis on 32 prospective trials (each with a variable sample from 10 to 76 patients), sensitiveness and specificity of means of contrast NMR have been assessed and compared with gold standard represented by angiography.

The American Cancer Society in 1992 has released the recommendations to perform a “basic” mammography at 35 years of age, but not only isn’t this practice put into action for scientific popularization by mass media, but it is not even encouraged by general practitioners themselves. In the USA, besides, there is a further problem, represented by the lack of insurance cover for this exam under 40 years of age. Some researchers have now collected the data from six mammographic registries including 120,000 women undergoing their first mammography at an age between 18 and 39.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned women not to substitute breast thermography for mammography to screen for breast cancer. Unlike mammography, in which an X-ray of the breast is taken, thermography produces an infrared image that shows the patterns of heat and blood flow on or near the surface of the body. Some health care providers claim thermography is superior to mammography as a screening method for breast cancer because it does not require radiation exposure or breast compression.

Colonoscopy is more and more frequently used for colorectal cancer screening, but there are no wide randomized trials comparing colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy or comparing both procedures with the non-performance of endoscopic screenings. The U. S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends the performance of these two exams or the search for fecal occult blood. Over ten years ago, in England, 170,000 patients, selected in the outpatient clinics for general practice, were randomized to undergo non-recurring flexible sigmoidoscopy at 55-64 years of age or not to perform any screening.
