In women affected by Von Willebrand disease or by other bleeding disorders there is a hemorrhage risk associated with the onset of menstruation and delivery. The incidence of Von Willebrand disease is estimated around 1%-3%, but its prevalence in women with menorrhagia rises to 11% with a maximum of 16%. There are also various kinds of this disease, which are associated with a more or less marked severity in bleedings: type 1, with a deficiency of Von Willebrand factor (VWF), type 2, in which there is an abnormality of the factor itself, and type 3, with a complete lack of VWF. While the association with menorrhagia and with bleeding disorders in general is well known, we still know very little about the relation between these congenital defects and bleeding developing in the post-partum.

The management of body weight during pregnancy has undergone fundamental changes in the last twenty years (the most recent guidelines published by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) date back to the Nineties): women are today culturally more advanced, the average BMI of the population – at least in the USA – has increased, the age for the first pregnancy has shifted onwards and there are comorbilities such as hypertension and/or diabetes. The new recommendations by IOM have been given in May 2009 and are based on BMI categorization before pregnancy according to the definitions of the World Health Organization (WHO), with the result of being more limitative.
