According to observational trials, it was suggested that statins are not only capable to lower plasmatic lipids and to prevent cardiovascular diseases, but also to have a protective action towards pulmonary respiratory infections and towards other infections in general. In this population, case-control trial, the hypothesis that the continuous use of statins can in effects decrease community-acquired pneumonias among healthy and immunocompetent adults, living in the State of Washington and being between 64 and 95, was verified.

The association between sleep disorders in general (above all obstructive sleep apneas syndrome) and hypertension is well known, while there is still a pathogenetic doubt on the role of obesity in these situ-ations. So, some researchers have examined the data from a multicentric trial published in 2000, where about 2500 subjects being averagely 60, with no hypertension and no sleep disorders, underwent poly-somnography with the calculation of apnea-hypopnea index.

On June 22, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. This landmark legislation, which passed the House by a vote of 307 to 97 and the Senate 79 to 17, grants the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) extensive authority to regulate tobacco products. In signing the law, Obama underscored the importance of radically limiting the tobacco industry's capacity to market its products to young people. "The kids today don't just start smoking for no reason," he said.
