    Thalidomide/dexamethasone in myeloma: a double-edged sword

Thalidomide was introduced for multiple myeloma (MM) in 1998. Its mode of action makes it a suitable candidate to combine with corticosteroids. Hence, it has been combined with dexamethasone or melphalan/prednisolone (MP) as upfront treatment for patients who are not eligible for high-dose therapy.

BMI scale not accurate measure for obesity

Certain ethnic groups may not be getting accurate estimates of disease risk when they try to determine obesity using the traditional body mass index scale, say researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Houston in a study in the current edition of British Journal of Nutrition. DXA images are of two adults with the same BMI.

Use of Pharmacologic Agents for Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus, Dyslipidemia, and Hypertension in Children and Adolescents

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of mortality in the adult population of the United States.1 Much of this is due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Recognition of these facts has led to national guidelines to control risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, and to the concept that recognition, treatment, and control of risk factors are important to prevent cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality.

Reduction in C-reactive protein and LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular event rates after initiation of rosuvastatin: a prospective study of the JUPITER trial

Statins lower high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and cholesterol concentrations, and hypothesis generating analyses suggest that clinical outcomes improve in patients given statins who achieve hsCRP concentrations less than 2 mg/L in addition to LDL cholesterol less than 1ยท8 mmol/L (<70 mg/dL). However, the benefit of lowering both LDL cholesterol and hsCRP after the start of statin therapy is controversial. We prospectively tested this hypothesis.
