  • The Prognostic Role of a Gene Signature from Tumorigenic Breast-Cancer Cells

A small population of distinctive breast-cancer cells can recapitulate an entire breast cancer when injected into immunodeficient mice. These cells express a unique group of genes, which when expressed in patients with breast cancer portend a poor outcome.

  • Mammographic Density and the Risk and Detection of Breast Cancer

The light appearance of epithelium and stroma in a mammogram (mammographic density) can hide the presence of a cancer. A careful study of this problem found that extensive mammographic density is an important risk factor for breast cancer.

  • Adjuvant Chemotherapy With Gemcitabine vs Observation in Patients Undergoing Curative-Intent Resection of Pancreatic Cancer

Objective is to test the hypothesis that adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine administered after complete resection of pancreatic cancer improves disease-free survival by 6 months or more.

  • Most cancers in Europe avoidable

The study, which looked at 11 cancers that can be prevented by changes to lifestyle, estimates that of 1.4 million cases, more than half—363 000 (59%) in men and 326 000 (45%) in women—could be avoidable.

  • Sunitinib versus Interferon Alfa in Metastatic Renal-Cell Carcinoma

Sunitinib is one of several new antiangiogenic agents undergoing tests of efficacy in the treatment of various types of cancer. Renal-cell carcinoma of the clear-cell type is particularly important in this regard because of the evidence that mutations in the VHL gene result in stimulation of cellular receptors that promote angiogenesis and tumor growth. This trial found promising results with sunitinib in the treatment of metastatic renal-cell cancer.

  • Microenvironmental Genomic Alterations and Clinicopathological Behavior in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Carcinogens associated with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) genesis should inflict genomic alterations not only on the epithelium but also the mesenchyme of the aerodigestive tract. Therefore, the apparently nonmalignant stroma surrounding the tumor epithelium can acquire genomic alterations and contribute to cancer initiation and progression.

  • Herceptin improves two-year survival for women with breast cancer

Giving women with a certain type of breast cancer trastuzumab (Herceptin) for a year after standard chemotherapy may improve their survival, according to an Article. In the trial women with HER2-positive early breast cancer were randomised to receive Herceptin for one year after surgery and chemotherapy or were assigned to receive no intervention.

  • A Five-Gene Signature and Clinical Outcome in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer

The authors show that a five-gene signature is closely associated with outcome among patients who have undergone surgical resection of early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer. This investigation represents the final phase of work to devise molecular methods for staging tumors and formulating a prognosis. For the findings to be clinically directive, these kinds of signatures will need to be incorporated into prospective clinical trials of cancer treatment.
