  • H1N1 Influenza during Pregnancy

    During influenza pandemics, pregnant women generally present a greater morbidity and mortality. At the beginning of H1N1 virus pandemic, the CDC have collected the results of all influenza cases confirmed in pregnant women, with the relative evolution and possible complications. Between April 15th and May 18th 2009, 31 confirmed cases, and 3 probable but not confirmed ones, of H1N1 influenza in pregnant women have been recorded.

  • Polio eradication within 5 years now a real possibility

    Last year was a significant one for polio eradication. Real progress was made simultaneously in northern Nigeria, on the Afghanistan–Pakistan border, and in the remaining pockets in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in India, cutting the number of cases worldwide to 1597 (correct as of Feb 2, 2010).

  • Study fails to show link previously found between virus and chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Antimicrobial treatment for early, limited Mycobacterium ulcerans infection: a randomised controlled trial

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

    The recent acquittal of Kay Gilderdale, who had been charged with the attempted murder of her 31 year old daughter Lynn, has led to blanket press coverage this week. She was given a one year suspended sentence for the lesser charge of aiding and abetting suicide, to which she had earlier entered a guilty plea. The debate in the media has focused on the rights and wrongs of assisted suicide, the wisdom of bringing a prosecution for attempted murder, and whether the law needs to be changed.

  • Influenza Prevention

    Given the great diffusion of influenza viruses and the high rate of infection, researchers wondered whether virus transmission can be prevented, not only in hospitals but also in daily life. Some patients affected by influenza (shown through fast test) and their contacts (most of all children) in 407 families in Hong Kong have been randomized, adopting the following strategies: - Diet education and lifestyle (control group) - Hand hygiene (use of soap and disinfection of the hands after a sneeze, cough or contact with some objects) - Hand hygiene and of a facemask (worn as often as possible for seven days, both at home and outside).
