  • Gabapentin and Nortriptyline in Neuropathic Pain

    Gabapentin and nortriptyline are first-use drugs in neuropathic pain, but they present unpleasant side effects according to the used dose and their efficacy is limited. In this trial, it was evaluated whether drugs can be more effective in combined therapy, since their mechanism of action is different. Some researchers in Canada have randomized 45 patients affected by diabetic polyneuropathies or post-herpetic neuralgias into three groups.

  • FDA Approves New Indication for Tasigna

    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved a new indication for Tasigna (nilotinib) for the treatment of a rare blood cancer when it is first diagnosed. The cancer, called Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic phase chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CP-CML), is a slowly progressing blood and bone marrow disease linked to a genetic abnormality.

  • Diclofenac Gel

    Topic diclofenac, in its gel formulation, is widely used (above all as an OTC drug) in knee and hand osteoarthritis pain. With a randomized trial, sponsored by pharmaceutical industry, 385 patients with osteoarthritis pain have been treated with diclofenac gel (4 applications a day for 8 weeks) or with a gel with no active substance. All patients had undergone an X-ray exam, showing interphalangeal or carpal-metacarpal osteoarthritis.

  • New technique enables drugs tests via exhaled breath

    A new study from Karolinska Institutet presents a new technique that makes drug testing possible through exhaled air for the first time. By examining people who had received emergency care for an amphetamine overdose, the researchers found that in all cases there were traces of amphetamine and metamphetamine in the exhaled breath.

  • Aspirin plus Heparin or Aspirin Alone in Women with Recurrent Miscarriage

    Aspirin and low-molecular-weight heparin are often prescribed to women with unexplained recurrent miscarriage, but their benefit is unclear. In this randomized trial involving women with a history of unexplained recurrent miscarriage, treatment with 80 mg of aspirin and open-label nadroparin (at a dose of 2850 IU) or aspirin alone did not improve live-birth rates or other pregnancy outcomes, as compared with placebo.

    On April 6, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first generic versions of two drugs used for the treatment of hypertension. Losartan potassium tablets and losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide tablets (a combination drug) are the generic equivalents of Cozaar and Hyzaar tablets, respectively.
