NICE has issued the first ever national guideline addressing both the prevention and treatment of obesity in adults and children. It contains wide ranging recommendations, not just for the NHS, but also for schools and early years providers, local authorities, employers and town planners. The guideline also sets out what individuals can do to help maintain a healthy weight.

The association between obesity (BMI ≥ 30) and mortality is well known, but some doubts still remain on overweight risks (BMI 25-29,9). In this American trial, more than 500.000 subjects (between 50 and 71 years of age) completed some questionnaires in the period between 1995 and 1996 involving the recording of self-measured weight and height.

Since sibutramine is efficacious in helping weight loss in adults, some researchers performed a randomized, multicentric trial, sponsored by Pharmaceutical Industry, comparing the drug with placebo in 498 adolescents (12 to 16 years of age) presenting a BMI higher than the 95th percentile. All adolescents also received dietetic sport advices.
