  • Iodine-125 brachytherapy for brain tumours

Iodine-125 brachytherapy has been applied to brain tumours since 1979. Even though the physical and biological characteristics make these implants particularly attractive for minimal invasive treatment, the place for stereotactic brachytherapy is still poorly defined. An extensive review of the literature has been performed, especially concerning indications, results and complications.

  • Intensity modulated or fractionated stereotactic reirradiation in patients with recurrent nasopharyngeal cancer

A study reports the experience with intensity-modulated or stereotactic reirradiation in 17 patients suffering from recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma, by intensity-modulated (n=14) or stereotactic (n=3) reirradiation. Results show that reirradiation with intensity-modulated or stereotactic techniques in recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma is feasible and yields encouraging results in terms of local control and overall survival in patients with acceptable toxicity in patients with less advanced recurrences. However, the achievable outcome is limited in patients with involvement of intracranial structures, emphasising the need for close monitoring after primary therapy.
