  • Prevalence of collagen VII-specific autoantibodies in patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases

Autoimmunity to collagen VII is typically associated with the skin blistering disease epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA), but also occurs occasionally in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus or inflammatory bowel disease. A study developed an immunoassay for assessing the presence of autoantibodies against collagen VII in large cohorts of patients and healthy donors.

  • Do you think it's a disease? A survey of medical students

Students were mostly concordant on what conditions should be classified as "disease". They were more likely to classify synonyms as 'disease' if the label was medical. These are the outcome of a survey, aimed at determining how medical students classify a range of conditions they might encounter in their professional lives and whether a different name for a condition would influence their decision in the categorisation of the condition as a 'disease' or 'not a disease'.

  • Transcriptome landscape of the human placenta

The placenta is a key component in understanding the physiological processes involved in pregnancy. Characterizing genes critical for placental function can serve as a basis for identifying mechanisms underlying both normal and pathologic pregnancies. Detailing the placental tissue transcriptome could provide a valuable resource for genomic studies related to placental disease.

  • Usability of therapy controllers in elderly patients with deep brain stimulation (DBS)

Technical devices are becoming more prevalent in society and also in medical care. Older adults need more support to learn new technologies than younger subjects. A research showed that elderly DBS patients who have been using the controller for several years still have various difficulties in operating the device. However, age-specific training may improve the performance. In general, the design of DBS patient controllers should focus on the specific needs of the end-users. But as changes to medical devices take a long time to be implemented, video instructions with age-specific content plus hands-on training may improve learning for older adults.

  • Chest x-ray screening in smokers: lung cancer detection findings and follow-up

In the setting of CXR screening offered to a population-based cohort of smokers, screening participants who were diagnosed with LC had more frequently early-stage resectable disease and significantly enhanced long-term LC survival. These results translated into enhanced 10-year LC survival, independently related to CXR screening exposure, in the entire population-based cohort.

  • Breast cancer patients with lobular cancer more commonly have a father than a mother diagnosed with cancer

An analysis on 1676 breast cancer patients evidenced that lobular breast cancer is associated with having a father diagnosed with cancer, most commonly prostate carcinoma. Since the association remained after excluding family history of breast cancer, the association seems independent of classical breast cancer heredity. The association with a father diagnosed with cancer also remained after removing prostate cancer, indicating an independence from prostate cancer as well.

  • Intraoperative ventilation: incidence and risk factors for receiving large tidal volumes during general anesthesia

There is a growing concern of the potential injurious role of ventilatory over-distention in patients without lung injury. No formal guidelines exist for intraoperative ventilation settings, but the use of tidal volumes (VT) under 10mL/kg predicted body weight (PBW) has been recommended in healthy patients. We explored the incidence and risk factors for receiving large tidal volumes (VT>10mL/kg PBW).

  • Barriers and Progress in the Treatment of Low Back Pain

Low back pain is a common and costly condition, and for most people is likely to be a recurrent problem throughout their lifecourse. A commentary summarises the array of treatments currently available, notes the results of recent trials and guidelines and considers alternative approaches that may prove more valuable in achieving better patient outcomes in the future.

  • Emerging therapies for severe asthma

Many patients with asthma have poorly controlled symptoms, and particularly for those with severe disease, there is a clear need for improved treatments. A review summarizes recent progress made in developing viable therapies for severe asthma and briefly discuss the idea that development of novel therapies for asthma is likely to increasingly involve the assessment of genotypic and/or phenotypic factors.
