Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the operation most commonly performed by cardiac surgeons. There are few contemporary data examining evolving patient characteristics and surgical outcomes of isolated CABG. Trends in patient characteristics and outcomes after CABG over the past decade have been characterized using the Society of Thoracic Surgeons adult cardiac surgery database.

Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) without cardiopulmonary bypass has evolved during the past 2 decades and has gained popularity in many centers. Despite favorable evidence from both prospective randomized trials and large observational studies, however, the adoption of OPCAB has been variable both worldwide and in the United Kingdom, where it has plateaued at approximately 17%. Moreover, recent studies suggest that OPCAB may be associated with adverse outcomes. The goals of this editorial are to evaluate critically the current status

Thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR) was introduced in 2005 to treat descending thoracic aortic aneurysms. Little is known about TEVAR's nationwide effect on patient outcomes. We evaluated nationwide data regarding the short-term outcomes of TEVAR and open aortic repair (OAR) procedures performed in the United States during a 2-year period.

Aortic regurgitation resulting from progressive dilatation of the aortic root late after surgical correction of congenital heart disease is now widely recognized. We reviewed our experience with aortic valve–sparing operations to access the effectiveness of this approach.

Regional cerebral perfusion has been adopted as a means to improve neuroprotection during aortic arch reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a strategy of regional cerebral perfusion rather than one of deep hypothermic circulatory arrest during aortic arch reconstruction would improve neurodevelopment without increasing morbidity or mortality for patients undergoing the Norwood operation.

Pulsatile blood flow has been regarded to be of importance for the regulation of endocrine organs. A new generation of continuous flow mechanical blood pumps is now available for clinical application. Patients with implanted MicroMed-DeBakey axial pumps show nonphysiologic low-pulsatile blood flow profiles, and therefore it appeared to be of interest to evaluate their possible effect on the endocrine system.
