The application of a cervical collar on a trauma victim can cause more harm to the patient, leading to secondary injuries or even death, according to experts at Baylor College of Medicine in a study that appears in the current online edition of the Journal of Trauma . "Cervical extrication collars are put on about 15 million times a year in the United States alone by emergency medical personnel or doctors in hospitals to protect the cervical spine in case of a bad injury. It is known that after a person has a bad injury, you can create a secondary injury very easily," said Dr. John Hipp , assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at BCM and senior author of the paper. "We have discovered that the cervical collar, in the case of a really bad injury, not only doesn't protect the spine but can actually make things a lot worse."

Patients who suffer from lumbar disc herniations may choose a proactive option for relieving the pain, according to an expert at Baylor College of Medicine. A herniated disc occurs in the spine when there is a tear in the outer ring of a disc and the soft, central portion bulges out. When this occurs in the lumbar region of the spine, epidural steroid injections may be a treatment option.

There is an association between osteoporotic fractures (above all hip and vertebral fractures) and increased mortality. In order to better quantify this risk, 4005 Australian miners (older than 60 at enrolment) and their families have been followed for 18 years: during this period, there have been all kinds of fractures in 1295 participants (sex distribution was of 952 women and 343 men), with a clear prevalence of hip, vertebral, pelvic, rib fractures.

Patients undergoing elbow X-rays for injuries are, in most cases, without fractures, so researchers thought it was necessary to verify whether there is the possibility to exclude a fracture without using X-ray exams. Some English researchers have examined more than 1700 adults and children with elbow injuries, verifying the joint extension, judged as normal in the presence of the greatest and symmetric extension with supine arms and bent shoulders at 90°.
