Malaria diagnostic tests differ in performance

Some of the commercial rapid diagnostic tests for malaria perform exceptionally well in tropical temperatures. They can detect even low parasite densities in blood samples, while other tests can detect parasites only at high densities, according to a laboratory-based evaluation.

A review of human carcinogens—Part C: metals, arsenic, dusts, and fibres

In March, 2009, 27 scientists from eight countries met at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to reassess the carcinogenicity of metals, arsenic, dusts, and fibres previously clas sified as “carcinogenic to humans” (Group 1) and to identify additional tumour sites and mechanisms of carcinogenesis.

Effectiveness of haemodialysis access with an autologous tissue-engineered vascular graft: a multicentre cohort study

Application of a tissue-engineered vascular graft for small-diameter vascular reconstruction has been a long awaited and much anticipated advance for vascular surgery. We report results after a minimum of 6 months of follow-up for the first ten patients implanted with a completely biological and autologous tissue-engineered vascular graft.

Positive deviants—role models for MRSA control

An approach to social and behavioural change—positive deviance (PD)—has been linked with improved control of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a US multicentre study. “Reports of successful multicentre interventions to reduce the problems of endemic antimicrobial-resistance among US hospitals are rare”, says John Jernigan, part of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, GA, USA) team that did the analysis.

Simple blood test proves powerful ally in the fight against malaria

Scientists at Karolinska Institutet have shown that rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) for malaria infection can provide valuable support for healthcare in low and mid-income countries in the fight against the disease. The RDT procedure is based on a simple blood test and, according to the results, helps to ensure that a greater number of patients receive the right treatment at no extra cost for the healthcare services.

Tufted bacteria cause infection in premature babies

Bacteria that normally reside on the skin of healthy people can cause serious infections in premature babies. A group of researchers at Karolinska Institutet have now found an explanation for why a certain kind of staphylococcus can attach itself to the skin and quickly develop dynamic ecosystems: the bacteria are like tufted, self-adhesive hairballs.

A Step Forward in Therapy for Hepatitis C

The therapy of hepatitis C began almost 25 years ago with a small trial of recombinant human interferon alfa. The rationale for using interferon was its broad antiviral effects and the suspicion that it might be active against the still-undiscovered agent of non-A, non-B hepatitis.
