    There are 120 000 cases of renal cell carcinoma in Europe and the USA every year, causing 60 000 deaths. Until recently standard treatment options were immunotherapy with either interleukin 2 or interferon. Researcher’s trialled 649 patients with untreated metastatic renal cell carcinoma to see if bevacizumab plus interferon alfa improved efficacy compared to interferon treatment alone.
