Growth factor receptor affects prostate cancer progression

Breeding mice with a gene for a cellular receptor that can be turned on and off - at will - not only enabled researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston to show how prostate cancer progresses, but also provides a model for studying when a drug targeting a gene will have an effect on the cancer.

Researchers Deconstruct Metastasis: Genetic Clues Revealed

Often a final and fatal step in cancer progression, metastasis causes 90% of all cancer deaths and is associated with a median survival after diagnosis of less than 2 years. But ongoing research efforts are providing clues to potential therapeutic targets by deciphering the complex genetic events that enable tumor cells to disseminate and invade distant organs.

Personalized Care May Help Smokers Quit

Promoting cessation to individuals who continue to smoke despite well-known health risks may be a matter of zeroing in on their unique fears about quitting, their motivations to do so, and offering them more concrete evidence of how smoking is affecting their personal health, according to a pair of studies presented in October at CHEST 2007, the annual scientific assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Metabolic Effects of a Growth Hormone–Releasing Factor in Patients with HIV

This study assessed the effects of 26 weeks of therapy with tesamorelin, a growth hormone releasing factor analogue, versus placebo on visceral adiposity in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); 86% of the patients were men. Daily tesamorelin treatment decreased the amount of visceral fat and improved the lipid profile.

Childhood Body-Mass Index and the Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in Adulthood

In this Danish study, body-mass index in childhood was associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) events in adulthood. The association was stronger in boys than in girls, and the risk of an event in adulthood increased in both sexes as the child's age increased from 7 to 13 years.
